Fifth set:

1040: “Enthralling reading this match, keeping me amused during the long check in queue for my flight from Manilla to Hong Kong. Great country the Philippines, but not renowned for its administration. Anyway, I will be toasting Tipsy with my duty free.”
From Rob, Manilla, via text

Federer 10-8 Tipsarevic
Federer has a couple of dodgy moments with errant groundstrokes but converts his second match point at 40-30 to claim a truly dramatic victory. I need a lie down.

Federer 9-8 Tipsarevic
A fizzing off-forehand winner takes Tipsy to 40-0 and I’m starting to feel a bit tipsy myself, or at least light-headed. From nowhere, Tipsarevic starts to falter ands Federer is back at deuce when the Serb puts a backhand long, but at break point he comes up with a huge forehand. Federer forces another break point with a hooked forehand cross-court pass and this time he converts when Tipsarevic cannot get enough on a lunging backhand volley. Incredible stuff.

Federer 8-8 Tipsarevic
Federer races through another service game – Roddick and El Aynaoui went to 21-19 in a fifth set a few years back. Lordy.

1001: “Ive always thought tipsarevic looks like rino gattuso of ac milan…”
From Shiraz, Harrow, via text

1000: “Go tipsy, its your birthday.”
From Danielle, bucks, via text (It’s not, but thanks)

Federer 7-8 Tipsarevic
Amazing stuff from both men after over four hours as they race around the baseline thumping groundstrokes. Federer gets to 30-30 and this goes down as a chance – until Tipsarevic comes up with a forehand winner and Federer nets a backhand. Still no break points in this set.

Federer 7-7 Tipsarevic
Federer holds again. This may never end. Good stuff though.

Federer 6-7 Tipsarevic
Federer steps around a backhand to thump a forehand winner but Tipsarevic stays strong and holds to 30. If this wasn’t so gripping, I’d be thinking about breakfast now. Oh dear.

Federer 6-6 Tipsarevic
Pretty solid stuff from Federer again, although he does prod one tame backhand into the net. The crowd is pretty much at fever pitch the whole time now.

Federer 5-6 Tipsarevic
This time it’s Tipsarevic who shows the merest hint of nerves with a wild forehand for 30-30 but again he comes through with some big serving.

0942: “Piers. Can I get tipsy now?” (see 0649 entry)
From Kevin, Norwich… (I’ll need one myself when this is over)

0941: “Tipsy looks like louis theroux, wow it must be early.”
From Barry, weston super mare, via text

Federer 5-5 Tipsarevic
A flicker of uncetainty from Fed at 30-0 when he shanks a forehand several feet long and then prods at a drive volley which just sneaks in. He holds to 15 and the pressure is back on Tipsarevic.

Federer 4-5 Tipsarevic
Great stuff from Tipsarevic, who charges to the net and punches away a forehand volley for 40-15 before winning a baseline rally. He’s one game from a historic win.

Federer 4-4 Tipsarevic
Federer comes through a very sticky service game from 30-30 and gets back on level terms.

Federer 3-4 Tipsarevic
There is absolutely no let-up from either man and Tipsy holds to 15. You would imagine there is a fair crowd watching this in the men’s locker room.

Federer 3-3 Tipsarevic
Bish, bash, bosh. Bosh. Three aces and a winner give Federer a comprehensive service hold.

0921: “The Fed-express was just keepin us entertained for gettin up early. FACT! Go Roger!”
From Ethel Cardew, Darkside, via text

Federer 2-3 Tipsarevic
At 0-30, Tipsarevic plays a typically gutsy rally and leaps to put away a smash. He follows it up with a belter of a forehand but Federer then wins one of the rallies of the match with a sweeping cross-court backhand. The crowd goes bananas, Federer has a break point and…. he cannot get around an attempted pass and sends it long.

No mistake on the next point and he sets up break point number two….. cue a massive Tipsarevic ace. The Serbian slugger holds on again.

Federer 2-2 Tipsarevic
Anything you can do…. Federer fires down an ace as he holds to 15 and there’s not much sign of a break on either side.

Federer 1-2 Tipsarevic
More big serving from Tipsy, he’s not going anywhere at the moment. Federer has not lost at this stage of a Grand Slam since going down to Gustavo Kuerten at the 2004 French Open.

Federer 1-1 Tipsarevic
Federer gets caught in a lengthy rally at 30-15 and sends a backhand long but Tipsarevic cannot return the next two serves and the Swiss holds.

0906: “When did federer last play 5 sets bt this stage of a slam? Tipsy on the other hand… My money is on the serb, go tipsy!”
From alex in godalming via text

Federer 0-1 Tipsarevic
Well done Tipsy, he holds comfortably.

0901: Tipsarevic has his right foot bandaged at the changeover. It takes ages. I could do with some of that myself.

Fourth set:

0856: “thanks for ur coverage but i can now see the tennis on bbci.”
From Peter, cambs, via text (Turncoat!)

Federer 6-1 Tipsarevic
Federer wraps it up with a solid service game and we’re into a fifth. Who’s your money on? Yeah, mine too.

0854: “Come on tipsy! Federer is good but it would be nice if someone else got a chance at winning for a change!”
From Jo Lenton, bristol, via text

0853: “It’s nice to see that Fed is actualy human after all, i was beginning to wonder!”
From Andrew H, shrewsbury, via text

Federer 5-1 Tipsarevic
A devilish hooked forehand gets Federer to 30-30 and he then races to the net and slides over an angled backhand winner. Break point number 267 for the Swiss. Tipsarevic saves it with a big serve. Another break point and a cracker of a rally finished off by Tipsy at the net. Break point number three – Tipsarevic makes a winning smash. Break point numero four – Federer thumps away a forehand winner. This set is done and dusted now, surely.

0845: “Tipsy is officially my hero. He has played brilliant and should get all the credit for making Federer look average.”
From Danielle, bucks, via text

Federer 4-1 Tipsarevic
Federer holds serve to 15 and looks on course to level things up.

Federer 3-1 Tipsarevic
Federer gets yet another two break points at 15-40 but sticks the first in the net. That takes him to 1/10 of break points converted. Finally he stops the rot by punching away a backhand volley and he has the advantage, in this set at least. And thank you to my glamorous assistant Sarah for taking over briefly while I took some air. Well, my assistant Sarah. It is early.

Federer 2-1 Tipsarevic
Federer still looks a bit shakey out there but holds to 30 to edge ahead.

Federer 1-1 Tipsarevic
Federer eats into the Tipsarevic serve at 40-30 and the Serb shoots his forehand long with an exclamation to slide to deuce. Tipsarevic gets out of trouble with a couple of big serves.

“Tipsarevic has really plugged away at Federer’s backhand and has taken his chances. His serving has also been outstanding.
BBC Sport’s analyst Sam Smith in Melbourne

Federer 1-0 Tipsarevic
Federer looks a little disconsolate and calls the trainer on court to receive treatment on his right foot. I know it’s a bit early for this but he looks as though he is having his toe nails clipped. Now it’s on with the RF embossed shoes and onto the fourth set. No problems for the Swiss in this game as he holds to 15.

Federer 5-7 Tipsarevic
We could be on the verge of something big here. Keeganesque. Tipsarevic serves out the set to 15 and Federer is going to need five sets if he is to stay in the tournament.

Third set:

Federer 5-7 Tipsarevic
We could be on the verge of something big here. Keeganesque. Tipsarevic serves out the set to 15 and Federer is going to need five sets if he is to stay in the tournament.

Federer 5-6 Tipsarevic
Things get tasty at 30-30 when a Federer ace is successfully challenged by Tipsarevic, but the Swiss star remains calm and takes the point on second serve. A couple more Tipsy challenges have Federer looking distinctly unhappy and the Serb then fires a cross-court winner for break point.

0813: “I didn’t know Daniel Vettori played tennis.”
From Sooty, Devon, via text

Federer 5-5 Tipsarevic
Crunch time and Federer earns two set points, but he makes an error on the first and Tipsarevic does brilliantly to save the second with a dart to the net. Federer then sticks a backhand in the net and Tipsarevic manages yet another dramatic hold.

Federer 5-4 Tipsarevic
More Hawkeye bad feeling when Tipsarevic takes an age to decide to challenge, and then gets the decision. Federer skulks around behind the baseline shrugging his shoulders and muttering in one of the many languages he speaks. He then smacks a forehand winner and an ace. Easy.

Federer 4-4 Tipsarevic
Federer makes one of the least enthusiastic Hawkeye challenges ever seen, and with good reason – it’s a mile out. Tipsarevic holds to love.

Federer 4-3 Tipsarevic
There’s some big serving going on out there right now, Federer battering his way to 40-15 before finding an angled backhand winner. Not much sign of a break from either player and we could be on for another tie-break.

Federer 3-3 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic hangs in after a tricky game and his serve continues to get him out of trouble at important moments.

Federer 3-2 Tipsarevic
Love service game for Federer, no bother.

Federer 2-2 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic is back on form, firing down a huge ace to get to 40-0 and taking the game two points later when Federer spoons a backhand volley wide and long.

Federer 2-1 Tipsarevic
Blimey. Federer looks like he’s got this one under control and he comes up with a shocker of a game, handing it to Tipsarevic with a shonky drop shot and a poor backhand.

Federer 2-0 Tipsarevic
It’s deuce. Federer moves to the net to smack away a high drive-volley but Tipsy then saves the break point with a service winner. He then fires a backhand down the line that needs Hawkeye to tell us it missed by a hair’s breadth. Another break point, another big Tipsarevic serve. Federer then scrambles to pick up a drop shot and sends up a superb winning lob. Break point number three, Tipsy wallops a forehand into the corner and Hawkeye says it’s out. Myabe Federer will warm to it a bit now.

Federer 1-0 Tipsarevic
Another first game of a set, another comfort break for me. At least I’m regular. Federer holds serve.

Second set:

Federer 7-6 (7-1) Tipsarevic
Absolutely brilliant. After missing a hatful of backhands (if such a thing could possibly exist) Federer opens the tie-break with a screamer down the line. Huge serves and thumping winners follow before he rounds it off with a another backhand winner, this time cross-court. He really is good at this.

Federer 6-6 Tipsarevic
A measure of the seriousness of the situation comes when Federer lets out a “C’mon!” on his way to taking the game. Big tie-break coming up.

Federer 5-6 Tipsarevic
Take cover, hawkewye boffins, Federer is not happy. A Tipsy serve is called long but he challenges and the gizmo says it landed well inside the line. Even the umpire says, “It did look long.” Safin would have been through half a dozen rackets by now. Federer just shakes his head. Tipsarevic holds serve for the 12th time and things are getting slightly serious for the champion now.

Federer 5-5 Tipsarevic
You’ve got to hand it to Federer – I feel like smashing something up on his behalf after his last hour of frustration but he serenely rolls through another service game. Suppose that’s why he’s there and I’m… here.

Federer 4-5 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic finally loses his range and sticks a backhand into the middle of the net for 0-40. Federer then throws in a wayward forehand and a dodgy backhand, and Tipsarevic whacks down an ace and a service winner. Then, to rub salt in the Federer wound, the Swiss comes up with an air shot to give Tipsy the game. One of those days so far for Fed.

0711: “To answer peter from cambs…go on betfair, lay a Fed win at odds of 1.16 for a tenner (costing a 1.60 loss should he win) and watch the site’s live feed.”
From Gary, glasgow, via text

Federer 4-4 Tipsarevic
Federer holds to 15, and manages a successful Hawkeye challenge along the way. Still looks a bit miserable though. At the moment it reminds me of the match he played against Feliciano Lopez in the fourth round of the US Open – he really looked in trouble during that one but won in four sets, and no-one believed me when the world woke up the following morning.

0701: “Anyone stupid enough to even think Tipsarevic has a chance is clearly already drunk.”
From Sooty, Devon, via text

0700: “I’ll join you for breakfast beers if Tipsy wins Kev.”
From Mark, Stoke, via text

Federer 3-4 Tipsarevic
A howler of a forehand from Federer reminiscent of one of my own efforts draws a few giggles from the crowd and Tipsy holds to 15.

0658: “As i only have freeview & t’internet does anyone know how i could actually watch the fed express win in 4 sets?”
From Peter, cambs, via text

Federer 3-3 Tipsarevic
While Federer has plenty to feel grumpy about at the moment he’s not letting it affect his service games and he holds to love again.

Federer 2-3 Tipsarevic
Federer gets two break points at 15-40 and then challenges a fizzing Tipsy forehand. Hawkeye says it caught the line by approximately a millimetre. Federer is unimpressed to say the least. Tipsarevic then saves the next one by attacking the net and goes on to hold. It’s starting to get really interesting.

0649: “Tipsy gets less recognition than his fellow Serb players but he’s a very good player and a great character in Tennis. If he wins I may get tipsy myself…”
From Kevin, Norwich, via text (Steady on, it’s not 7am yet)

Federer 2-2 Tipsarevic
A beautiful sweeping cross-court forehand takes Federer 30-0 clear and he holds comfortably. He’s not playing badly, just lacking the inspiration at the right moments to break Tipsarevic.

Federer 1-2 Tipsarevic
Federer comes up with a superb squash shot – or forehand slice – winner and battles back to deuce from 40-15 down. A wayward Tipsy forehand drifts long but he then challenges Federer’s previous shot and it’s shown to be out. Fed is not happy, claiming Tipsarevic challenged after playing his own shot. He really doesn’t like the whole Hawkeye thing, our Rog. Tipsarevic holds.

Federer 1-1 Tipsarevic
Federer gets back on track by holding to 30 but he’s looking a bit deflated at the moment.

Federer 0-1 Tipsarevic
Right, have to admit I nipped out for a much-needed comfort break and when I got back Tipsy had held serve. I’m guessing it was pretty straightforward. Federer’s girlfriend Mirka sits in the stands implacably chewing gum. She gets through some gum, that girl.

First set:

Federer 6-7 (5-7) Tipsarevic
Well, I never. The first 11 points go with serve, Federer missing a couple of makebale passing shots along the way, which leaves Tipsarevic on set point at 6-5. Federer is in control of the ensuing rally but then, inexplicably, pulls his racket away and leaves a Tipsy passing shot that lands well in. The crowd gasps. And so do I.

Federer 6-6 Tipsarevic
At 30-0, all looks good for the bespectacled Serb but an error lets Federer back in and we’re soon at deuce. Federer then misses a high forehand volley with the court gaping and Tipsy hangs on. Will the Swiss live to regret that one?

Federer 6-5 Tipsarevic
Federer wins a fantastic rally at the net for 30-15 with a couple of sublime volleys and sees out the game comfortably. He’s not been in any trouble at all but the set is still very much alive. Famous last words.

Federer 5-5 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic is in danger when a Federer pass takes the score to 30-30 but the Serb thumps down a big serve and goes on to hold.

Federer 5-4 Tipsarevic
Federer produces one breathtaking forehand winner when rocked back on his heels but follows up with an error and he faces break point at 30-40. A net-cord follows and we’re back on serve. Surprising but not unheard of from the world number one, who has been known to let his concentration wander.

Federer 5-3 Tipsarevic
Excellent screaming from some Swiss fans when the camera settles upon them. Reminds me of my tube to work last night which was jam-packed with Spice Girls fans. Quite an experience. Meanwhile, Federer breaks to love. When he gets the Tipsarevic serve back it suddenly gets very difficult for the Serbian.

Federer 4-3 Tipsarevic
Federer looks in a serious mood today, he’s not messing about. Some very heavy serving and a couple of crunching serves give him a love hold and this set is racing by.

Federer 3-3 Tipsarevic
Another love game for the man from Belgrade and he’s more than holding his own at present.

Federer 3-2 Tipsarevic
There is a bizarre moment during the game when Tipsarevic stops playing halfway through a belter of a rally – after some discussion with the umpire it turns out he thought he heard a call, which actually came from the crowd. Tough luck, he loses the point and the game. Hopefully he can be philisophical about it.

Federer 2-2 Tipsarevic
Good stuff from Tipsy, who holds to love. For anyone foolish enough not to have spent the whole night watching tennis like me, rain has disrupted things today and the only play has been under the retractable roofs of the Rod Laver and Vodafone arenas. We keep being told the rain will disappear but at the moment it’s sticking around.

Federer 2-1 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic is a nice player – plenty of variety, happy at the net and with a decent serve – but it’s hard to see him having anything to trouble Federer, who holds easily again.

Federer 1-1 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic, wearing wraparound shades that are a touch Roy Orbison, double faults to let Federer back to 30-30 but the Swiss sticks a volley wide and the Serb holds from deuce.

Federer 1-0 Tipsarevic
Tipsarevic wins the toss and elects to receive. Federer wallops down two aces as he holds to love. What would Dostoevsky have to say about that, eh?

0545: Roger Federer, star of those cheesey new razor adverts, gets back to the day job with a third-round clash against Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic.

Not surprisingly, the Swiss star has a winning head-to-head record although they’ve only met once – a 6-3 6-2 6-2 win in the Davis Cup two years ago.

A former junior world number two, Tipsarevic won the Aussie junior title in 2001 and is a fan of Nietzsche, Dostoevsky and Goethe. Apparently he has a Dostoevsky tattoo on his left arm that reads “Beauty will save the world”. Hope so.
