“1821: Nadal, I’ve noticed, has a problem with his shorts, in that they keep on getting stuck up his jacksie and he has to pull them out before every point. Not sure why he doesn’t just get a size up, he’s probably loaded.”

Roddick v Federer as it happened

US Open, Flushing Meadows Quarter final result

6-7 6-7 2-6

By Caroline Cheese

Roddick 6-7 6-7 2-6 Federer
Roddick bravely saves one match point but dumps a backhand into the net on the second. You have to feel sorry for Roddick, who gets a standing ovation from the crowd. Federer continues to amaze. Not sure the US Open is going to get much better than that. Night one and all.

0509: “Finally retired to bed but can’t resist following the match with your live updates and my mobile! Keep it up Roddick!”
Joe in bed in Sheffield via text on 81111 (Think you might be able to sleep soon Joe)

Roddick 6-7 6-7 2-5 Federer
Jimbo is loving this. Roddick crunches a forehand onto the line to make it deuce, but the American makes two errors and all of a sudden, Fed’s a game away.

Roddick 6-7 6-7 2-4 Federer
Federer forces Roddick into a volley error to make it 15-30, then a passing shot on the run gets him, wait for it, not one but two BREAK POINTS! He sticks a backhand in the net on the first but after a gruelling rally, Roddick goes narrowly long and Federer clinches the first break of the match.

Roddick 6-7 6-7 2-3 Federer
Easy for Federer as Roddick misfires on the return.

Roddick 6-7 6-7 2-2 Federer
Roddick is, if anything, even more fired up now, muttering to himself after Federer challenges a call. The American sends down an ace to hold to 15.

Roddick 6-7 6-7 1-2 Federer
Roddick enjoys a bit of banter with someone in the crowd. Jimbo won’t like that. Federer slaps a backhand up the line and holds to 30.

0452: “Why’s this not on free TV?! If it was I’d have an easier time explaining to my girlfriend why I’m still up at 5am! Go Federer.”
Paul in Scotland via text on 81111

Roddick 6-7 6-7 1-1 Federer
You know, Roddick still hasn’t faced a break point and he’s two sets down. Federer does get to deuce but the American finds yet another forehand winner to get out of trouble.

Roddick 6-7 6-7 0-1 Federer
Another glimmer of light for Roddick at deuce but Federer simply brings out an ace and slams the door shut.

0443: “Roddick trying his best but it’s another Federer Express…”
Gordon, Bristol, via text on 81111

Second set

Roddick 6-7 6-7 Federer
A rare show of emotion from Federer as his backhand pass finds the line and he takes the first minibreak. Roddick hits back – battering Federer into submission with his forehand. But Fed’s back at him, smashing a blocked backhand return at Roddick’s feet to go 5-4 up. And that’s all he needs. I’m not sure I’ve seen Roddick play this well for this long and yet he’s two sets down. It’s a stunning match though.

0436: “Using duct tape and a simple stick, I have attached my forehead to the refresh key. Everytime I doze off, the text updates! Go Rodster!”

Roddick 6-7 6-6 Federer
Federer holds easily and we’re into a tiebreak. What can Roddick do this time?

Roddick 6-7 6-5 Federer
Federer gets to deuce thanks to a Roddick forehand which is millimetres out but the American bangs down a first serve then an ace.

Roddick 6-7 5-5 Federer
Roddick wins the first point again but again Federer comes back. Roddick deserves a set here at the very least.

Roddick 6-7 5-4 Federer
Ilie Nastase, Guillermo Vilas… it’s a who’s who of, er, old tennis players in Arthur Ashe Stadium tonight. Roddick holds to love and looks up to Connors. “Yes,” he shouts.

Roddick 6-7 4-4 Federer
You won’t believe this. Roddick forces the first break point of the match. Yes that’s right, a BREAK POINT! The American gets a look at a second serve but puts a rather tame effort over the baseline. Panic over. As you were.

Roddick 6-7 4-3 Federer
A chink of light for Federer as he gets to 30-30. Cannot believe we still haven’t seen a break point. I like the new Roddick – you can certainly tell Jimbo’s his coach. He’s really getting in Fed’s face. Obviously, Fed is completely unmoved but still…

0413: “Can see Fed winning in straight sets, all on tiebreaks. A loss of service appears as likely as a penguin in the desert right now!”
Chris at the NTCC via text on 81111

Roddick 6-7 3-3 Federer
Roddick is definitely trying out some mind games here, out of his chair early waiting for Federer. It’s not doing much good though. Fed holds to love.

Roddick 6-7 3-2 Federer
Roddick pumps his fist and shouts something as Federer misses a volley. Scary stuff. Still no break points. Seriously, let’s just get to the breaker shall we?

0408: “It’s OK Roddick. Everything will go your way. I’ve done my homework for you Rod, now I’ll go to sleep.”
Faris via text on 81111

Roddick 6-7 2-2 Federer
There’s Boris Becker, don’t think he was wearing a ludicrous retro suit either which is disappointing. Federer holds to 15. Shall we just fast-forward to the tiebreak?

Roddick 6-7 2-1 Federer
I’ve never heard Roddick grunt like this before. He sounds very, very determined. Maybe Connors has encouraged it. Anyway, holds to 15 there.

0401: “Moral: do not check the tennis score when you wake up in the middle of the night – get a good game and that’s it for sleep! Of course the company is good.”
David, South Wales, via text on 81111

Roddick 6-7 1-1 Federer
Fed holds to love and jogs to the chair to change his racquet.

Roddick 6-7 1-0 Federer
Roddick gives us a slam-dunk smash, Pete Sampras-style, as he holds to love. He jogs to the chair – good body language from the American. Still no break points for either man.

First set

Roddick 6-7 Federer
Unbelievable. Roddick throws absolutely everything at Federer, but the world number one refuses to crumble. The world number one does squander a mini-break but he produces a breathtaking backhand pass to move 6-4 ahead and seals it with an ace. Roddick could not have played a better set.

0349: “The Fedmeister is going to woop the sorry ass of A-Rod. The Fed will always rule supreme.”
Eric via text on 81111

Roddick 6-6 Federer
Imagine that! I got a prediction right. Tie-break it is. Fed wins the first point but no more.

Roddick 5-6 Federer
Federer seals another easy service game with an ace. I’m going out on a limb here: I reckon this is going to a tiebreak.

Roddick 5-5 Federer
Yikes, Roddick is an awkward volleyer. He claws one just over the net to make it 40-30 but can’t repeat the trick as Federer makes it deuce. Two aces get him out of trouble.

Roddick 4-5 Federer
No go for Roddick there as Federer comes through quite comfortably. 2004, that Wimbledon final. You know the one I mean.

Roddick 4-4 Federer
Anyone else reminded of that Wimbledon final when Roddick “threw the kitchen sink” at Federer and ended up just making the Swiss mister play better? The American fires down an ace to take it to 15 – and bellows “come on”. The boy is fired up.

0333: Venus won, Roddick next to win. This is America’s day. MARK MY WORDS.”
Faris via text on 81111 (Slightly chilling, that text)

Roddick 3-4 Federer
Looks like getting to the net is Roddick’s second line of attack. Some crisp volleying makes it 40-30 but Federer delivers a second-serve ace.

0329: “Just about to hit the sack but text me back if it goes to five sets!”
Anon via text on 81111 (Fine. Go to bed. Leave me here. I don’t mind. Sniff.)

Roddick 3-3 Federer
Quick as you like, Roddick levels up. Federer isn’t getting a look at the serve for the moment.

Roddick 2-3 Federer
No problem for Federer, flicking back a huge Roddick forehand return for an impudent winner. This is warming up nicely already.

Roddick 2-2 Federer
Hold to love for Roddick, who fires down a 146mph serve. Frightening.

0320: “This has the makings of a classic, why else would I be up at this stupid time!?”
Steve via text on 81111

Roddick 1-2 Federer
So that’s eight straight points for Federer on serve. He looks in the mood… which is bad news for Roddick.

Roddick 1-1 Federer
Both these men are wearing their black outfits for the night session. Doesn’t seem very manly to me all this evening wear nonsense. Typical Federer – he’s even got matching shoes. Federer fires two delicious winners – one off each wing – to get to deuce. Roddick holds on. Just.

Roddick 0-1 Federer
I can tell you Roddick is going to try to win this by belting his forehand as hard as humanly possible. It works on the first point but that’s as good as it gets.

0309: Please don’t forget to text me. I get a bit scared if I think I’m all on my own. Fed to serve first.

0304: My predictions thus far have been pretty abysmal I think we can all agree. Murray to beat Lee in straight sets anyone? Venus to thrash Jankovic in two sets? Still, I think I can safely say Federer will win this… in straight sets.

0301: Hello again. Fancy meeting you here. We’ve just had a sickly rendition of the American national anthem by a small child. You’ll be pleased you missed it, believe me. Federer and Roddick are now warming up.
